Frequently Asked Questions
What is a WISE Kid-Netic Energy workshop?
A WISE Kid-Netic Energy instructor will enter your classroom equipped with supplies, enthusiasm, and excitement for a jam-packed science, engineering, and technology workshop. These dynamic sessions consist of exciting demonstrations, interactive experiments, and hands-on activities. Upon completion of the workshop, the class will have developed an excitement for science, engineering, and technology while interacting with positive university role models.
WHO usually books workshops?
Our workshops are most commonly booked by elementary, middle, and high schools, but we also regularly accept bookings from daycares, nursery schools, home schooling groups, Girl Guides and scouting groups, and more! Beginning in summer 2019, we have started to offer special worksops for non-school groups including libraries and daycares. If you aren't sure whether your group is the right fit, why not send us an email and inquire?
When do your workshops take place?
Our workshops are available year-round, but are dependent upon instructor availability. Our scheduling coordinator would be happy to work with you to select an appropriate time.
Do you offer workshops outside of Winnipeg?
Yes! We will deliver workshops to communities up to a distance of 200km outside of Winnipeg from September to April. From May to August, we can go even further to reach communities throughout the province including Churchill, Norway House, Thompson, Flin Flon and more! Call or email us to get your community on our list of places to visit!
How much does a workshop cost?
Most workshops are offered for a nominal fee of $50 - $75. Sometimes, depending on our funding, we are able to offer certain workshops for free - but this is subject to change. A minimum of TWO workshops must be booked per visit, to ensure efficient use of our instructors' travel time.
Why do we charge for the workshops?
We charge a nominal fee per workshop to assist with costs related to travel, materials used during the presentation, and the wages of our undergraduate instructors. The nominal fee does not meet our total costs, but enables us to continue to deliver workshops, and reach as many youth as possible. We rely on sponsorship, funding grants, and donations to cover the rest of our costs.
What is "Adopt-a-Class"?
Adopt-A-Class is a program we started in 2012 to enable us to deliver our workshops to certain schools free of charge (ie. with no nominal fee for booking). It is intended to make our workshops more accessible to schools with greater socio-economic challenges, as identified by the community. Visit our Adopt-A-Class page for more information or to contribute to this program!
How do I pay for my workshops?
We will invoice you (your school or program) after you have recieved your workshops. This is because there are often last minute changes to workshop bookings and in order to avoid any incorrect invoices, it simply makes sense to invoice after the fact!
Cheques can be made payable to the University of Manitoba, and payment can be mailed to: University of Manitoba, Revenue, Capital and General Accounting, 315 Administration Bldg., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2
